All-Russian campaign for keeping Wrestling in the 2020 Olympic Games Program began In Kaliningrad

March 5th, about 200 pupils of the Wrestling center of the Olympic champions Sergei and Anatoly Beloglazovs in Kaliningrad took part in the campaign for keeping wrestling in the Olympic Games 2020.

“Russian Wrestling society has reacted very sharply to the decision of the IOC’s Executive Board – said Georgy Bryusov, the 1st Vice-president of the Russian Wrestling Federation, a member of the working group of FILA. - Therefore, the holding of mass actions to support wrestling was a matter of time. The first action took place in Kaliningrad - the westernmost city in the country. The idea of the action came spontaneously. Olympic champion Khadzhimurad Magomedov conducted a master class in the Wrestling center of the Olympic champions Sergei and Anatoly Beloglazovs. The conversation with the young wrestlers always switched to the topic of the future of wrestling. The result was a flash mob for keeping wrestling in the Olympic Games in 2020. We expect that the other 72 regional wrestling federations will support initiatives of the colleagues from Kaliningrad. "

Wrestling is one of the priority sports in the Kaliningrad region - a region with great wrestling traditions. Alexey Shemarov, who won the World championaship-2011 under the flag of Belarus, was among the protesters. "When I heard about the exclusion of wrestling from the Olympic Games in 2020, I felt as I’ve lost a relative. I worry very much for my sport, for the people who dedicated their lives to wrestling, for the boys who would have their debut at the Games 2020, and I am ready to take part in any activities to support the Olympic wrestling, "- claimed Alexey Shemarov. Among the organizers was another heavyweight athlete – the European Champion 1999, World Championship medalist Andrei Shumilin. At the Olympic Games 1996 he barred the way to the gold medal to American legendary Bruce Baumgartner. Then, however, he lost against him in the battle for the bronze. Today Shumilin develops wrestling in his native Kaliningrad as deputy chairman of the City Council. "I hope that in making its final decision IOC will take into account many factors of the social importance of wrestling and its role in the upbringing of a harmonious personality" - said Andrei Shumilin.
