On April 15th, at the opening of the Congress of the International Sports Press Association in Sochi, the Minister of Sports Vitaly Mutko described the steps which our country would take to return wrestling into the Olympic Games in 2020.
The decision to exclude wrestling from the Olympics was for us, firstly, unexpected, and secondly, not clear - said Vitaly Mutko. - Wrestling is developing in almost 190 countries around the world, and today Russia is not the absolute dominance on the world wrestling mat. In Japan, in America, in Turkey, and in Georgia – everywhere wrestling develops. For Russia it is the national sport. It is very simple: one needs only the room and the mat, even kids can train. In the USA in many schools pupils train wrestling. Another thing, wrestling has a lot of problems, but all sports have them. Of course, we are taking steps to return wrestling into the Olympics. But it is necessary to act calmly and consistently, without blaming anyone.
On May 28th the International Congress "Sport Accord" opens in St. Petersburg, and from 29 to 31 of May there is the IOC Executive Board. There will be determined the number of the sports that will be presented in Buenos Aires. Now the International Wrestling Federation (FILA) with the participation of Russia has taken a reform decision - Nenad Lalovic was elected as acting FILA President. We will support him at the extraordinary congress of the International Federation of Associated Wrestling Styles, which will be held on May 18th in Moscow. We are moving step by step. Now it is important that the IOC Executive Board supports wrestling to be presented to a vote. It is necessary to prepare a good presentation, to take into account all weak points. Unfortunately, FILA had poor contact with the IOC, and this accumulated problems in the relationships. But wrestling shouldn’t lose because of this.
